Teacher's Stress

What is stress?
 -It's the body's way of rising to a challenge and preparing to meet a tough situation with focus, strength, stamina, and heightened alertness.

Work-related stress is the result of a conflict between the role and needs of an individual employee and the demands of the workplace.
Teachers are increasingly perceived as facilitators or managers of knowledge.
Teaching has been identified as one of the most stressful professions today.

Causes of Stress for Teachers:
  • Pressure on professional skills
  • The school as a stressful workplace (Excessive working hours and Excessive workload)
  • Poor management(Lack of control over the job)
  • Student misbehavior
  • Difficult parent/teacher relations
  • Social and personal pressures
  • inadequate compensation

What are the negative effects of teacher stress?
  • Attrition - High stress can cause
    teachers to leave the
    profession.
  • Absenteeism - Stress can lead to illness
    and absenteeism.
    Teacher stress is significantly
    correlated with
    the total number of days
    that teachers are away from school.


How to manage stress in the work place:
  • Learn how to say “no”
  • Avoid people who stress you out
  • Avoid and alter stressor
  • Be optimistic
  • Adapt to the stressor
  • Don’t try to control the uncontrollable
  • Accept  things that cannot be changed
  • Make time for fun and relaxation
  • Exercise regularly
  • Eat a healthy diet
  • Avoid vices such as alcohol, cigarettes, and drugs
  • Get adequate sleep (8 hour a day)
